Chic loft in the Kress Building at 5th and Pine Ave in the heart of downtown Long Beach! Welcome to this approximately 900 SF open concept loft from the former department store Kress Five and Dime, built in the 1920s. This unique building boasts some fascinating history. While the lower-floor storefronts accommodated the S.H. Kress and Company Five-and-Dime Store from its opening in 1923 until 1981, the upper floors housed the offices which have huge windows on the north and south facing walls. The high-rise remained vacant between 1981 and 1992, until developers Peter Janopaul and Anthony Block transformed the building into 49 loft apartments and two retail spaces. These lofts ranged in size between 900 and 2,100 square feet. Restoration included the repainting of a wall sign advertising the Kress Five-Cent and Ten-Cent Store, and a new wall sign. Janopaul and Block's restoration occurred over 2-and-½ years between 1992 and 1995, very early for Downtown loft conversions. The Kress redevelopment was the first in Long Beach, and took about 2-and ½ years to sell completely to buyers. 6F is located on one of the upper floors that has an outside walkway, and is light and bright, and highly upgraded. Features include polished concrete floors, a blend of brick and concrete walls, stainless steel kitchen appliances, custom cabinets, inside washer and dryer, custom lighting, and much more. Qualifies for the Mills Act which has reduced the property taxes by 50%. A significant saving!
